For our July Zoom call, we will be joined by fire-resistant landscaping expert and author Greg Rubin. In conversation with Chapter Chair Charles Miller, Rubin will discuss the connections between climate and urban landscaping, and how proper landscaping can reduce the spread of urban wildfires.
Greg Rubin was named the 2018 Horticulturist of the Year by the San Diego Horticultural Society. He is the president & founder of California’s Own Native Landscape Design, Inc., and is a licensed design/build contractor who has designed over 800 residential, commercial, and institutional native landscapes in Southern California. Greg conducted a 4-year research project for the US Navy on fire-resistant native landscaping. He has participated in multiple advisory committees, and authored (with Lucy Warren) two bestselling books on native landscaping.

Join LA Waterkeeper, Hey Climate, and Patagonia Pasadena for PFAS Climate Night, an evening focused on the growing health and environmental risks of PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.”

Also known as the Gabrieleno Tongva Springs. This is a sacred site that supported and continues to support the thriving Tongva people.
The site welcomes visitors and volunteers on the first Saturday of each month to see and sustain this sacred space. Please join fellow members of the L.A. Chapter and L.A. community in accepting this gracious invitation and actively engage in the maintenance and upkeep of this beautiful indigenous space. Volunteers are generally asked to assist in gardening and landscaping initiatives, so bring your own gloves and gardening tools if you can.

Join Climate Reality Los Angeles and the Climate Action Campaign in LA for a People's Hearing with community members, local leaders, climate advocates, and health experts who will share their stories about the impact of extreme weather and speak out against the Trump administration’s reckless rollbacks of climate protections.
The program will include testimony from folks who have experienced extreme weather and want to see strong climate protections–we hope you’ll join us to hear their stories. We’ll also have opportunities for audience members to share their stories and take action. Consider testifying if you, too, have been impacted and demand that action be taken.
There will also be good food and drink to share!

In honor of National Public Works Week 2025, the City of Los Angeles Board of Public Works, Office of Community Beautification and Keep Los Angeles Beautiful proudly presents the 7th Annual Beautification Conference! This year’s Public Works Week theme (People, Purpose, Presence) focuses on different beautification opportunities to improve the quality of life for all Angelinos. This conference will convene a wide range of stakeholders with a shared vision of a cleaner and more sustainable Los Angeles.
Representatives from community organizations, nonprofits, youth advocates, researchers, Federal, State, County and Local Public Agencies, and City of L.A. Departments will gather online to share their stories, network, learn about programs and resources, and listen to various presentations on key topics.

SAVE THE DATE! The September LA Climate Reality chapter meeting will be a beach cleanup on Sunday, September 13, 9AM in Venice @Rose Ave. Cleanup 9AM to 11AM, followed by chapter meeting on the beach!
The cleanup is a collaborative event with Surfrider Los Angeles. Our trash collection efforts help steward our local environment, and provide data that Surfrider can use to influence laws and reduce waste at the source.

Resilient Cities Catalyst is hosting a documentary screening and interactive discussion that will explore how to bring big ideas and innovative global solutions in climate resilience to California on Tuesday, July 22 at 6:30pm at the Creative Artists Agency's Ray Kurtzman Theater.
RCC partnered with BBC and C40 Cities’ to develop a mini-doc as part of their Transforming Cities series, with support from the Alumbra Innovations Foundation, which will be screened along with other compelling solutions, and followed by a dynamic conversation with experts from across California on integrating resilience practice following the LA wildfires.
The Transforming Cities Mini-Doc explores Oceanside, CA’s effort to address coastal erosion and beach degradation through a unique, community-driven Design Competition that resulted in the RE:BEACH Oceanside Pilot Project, which recently received a $1.8m grant from the California Coastal Commission and was designated SANDAG’s third Resilient Beach Sand Pilot (RBSPIII) project.

For our monthly chapter meeting, Marissa Roy, a Deputy Attorney General for California and candidate for LA City Attorney, will join us to discuss climate advocacy and resistance in the face of a federal government that is rolling back civil rights and undermining democracy while undoing decades of climate work.
As an attorney in the LA City Attorney’s Office, outside counsel for the County of Los Angeles and in her current role for the state, she has fought against worker exploitation, wrongful evictions, and the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant policies.
We will be also be joined by Meredith Erin, co-founder of Boredwalk, an LA-based small business that brings together humor, art, and design.
Climate play Baby/Stuff Saturdays & Sundays, June 21 & 22, 28 & 29
Come see Baby/Stuff, a play in development about whether to have a baby given the climate crisis. The story follows two couples navigating the end of one life, the beginning of a new life, climate anxiety, our excessive consumption culture, and racial justice.
An almost fully-staged workshop production at the Hollywood Fringe Festival will be performed Saturdays and Sundays, June 21 & 22, 28 & 29 at the McCadden Theatre. Be part of the creative process and join an optional audience feedback session after the performance.

This event will begin with a hike led by WCS volunteers through one of Los Angeles' most beautiful spaces within Griffith Park, the Firebreak Trail to Griffith Observatory. We will meet at the trailhead across from the trails cafe.

In collaboration with The Open Book, The Persaud Foundation will be holding an Oceanic Literacy Day! We will be having an oceanic storytime for children at 2:30 PM with the book "Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean's Most Fearless Scientist", by Jess Keating. Afterward, we will have a Question & Answer Session about Marine Biology & Science Communication, in which children can discuss any questions that they may have about marine life, & any questions that they may have about entering the field. We shall also be reviewing our shark education fact cards, each of which features a new & interesting shark fact on it!

This webinar will focus on the newly released CalHeatScore tool, a public health tool to help Californians stay informed, ready, and safe when temperatures rise. The purpose of CalHeatScore is to reduce heat-related illness and save lives by translating weather and health data into easy-to-understand heat scores, ranging from 0 to 4 to indicate increasing levels of human health risk from extreme heat impacts.
Learn about the history of CalHeatScore and how the tool can be used now. This series is a partnership effort between the Office of Enviornmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), the Governor's Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation (LCI), and the Los Angeles Regional Collaborative for Climate Action and Sustainability (LARC).

Last month we learned from our guest speaker David Rosenstein why it's so important that we use our power as consumers to make sure our money isn't funding fossil fuels; now it's time to put that knowledge into action! Join us for a Green Banking Action Meeting where we'll go through the process of divesting yourself from dirty banks, discuss questions about practicalities, and talk about the roadblocks that keep us from giving up fossil fuels and how and why to get around them.
