Volunteer: 2026 Lawn to Habitat Conversion - Exposition Park

Help us transform a traditional lawn into habitat and learn how and why!

Join the Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance, LA Climate Reality, Surfrider, and other partners for this hands-on volunteer and learning opportunity transforming a water-hungry, monoculture grass lawn on a multifamily property into a biodiverse habitat zone that captures rainwater, reintroduces threatened native plants to the neighborhood, and supports pollinators and the web of life in our local ecosystem over the course of two days.

Volunteers will have an opportunity to learn about reconditioning compacted soil, creating eco-friendly weed barriers, determining soil type, mulching, planting techniques and establishment care for California native plants, water capture design options, and much more.

Chapter Meeting with USGBC California's Ben Stapleton

Rebuilding & Retrofitting for Resilient, Clean Energy Buildings

Our March 29 guest will be Ben Stapleton, Chief Executive Officer for USGBC California. His development and delivery of a portfolio of community engagement and education focused programming have centered on climate justice, high-performance buildings, occupant health, corporate sustainability, and regional resilience, fostering a sense of connection and shared purpose.

USGBC-CA’s mission is to leverage the built environment to make California a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable place for all. Ben served on the Blue Ribbon Commission on Climate Action and Fire Safe Recovery following the 2025 LA fires. USGBC-CA has produced a guide to sustainable and resilient rebuilding for communities impacted by the fires and has led or participated in numerous wildfire prevention and rebuilding workshops, trainings, and events.

USGBC-CA also works on building decarbonization, with a focus on improving existing buildings. Last year, the organization launched the California Building Performance Hub, a website that helps building owners and managers to understand how to measure the energy use and emissions from their buildings and strategically decarbonize their buildings, while also providing resources about building decarbonization policy to municipalities and other stakeholders.

Previously, Ben launched and then managed the internationally recognized regional epicenter for sustainability in Downtown L.A., the La Kretz Innovation Campus, while leading operations, finance, and major program initiatives for the LA Cleantech Incubator (LACI).

California: A Salmon Society?

7:00 PM19:00

California: A Salmon Society?

Join us for an engaging presentation on salmon of California.

Historically, California was rich in natural resources. Indigenous communities have lived in harmony with the land and water for countless generations. Among these resources were the abundant populations of Chinook salmon. People cared for the salmon, and the salmon provided for California’s peoples. The diversity of rivers and habitats across Northern California led to four distinct runs of Chinook salmon (winter, spring, fall, and late-fall), named for the time when they arrived in freshwater to begin their upstream migration toward spawning grounds. Adult salmon were present in the rivers nearly every month of the year. This diversity of life histories and habitats resulted in one of the largest salmon populations in the world. However, this changed rapidly with the arrival of European settlers.

Discover the historical connection between salmon and people of Northern California, the changes that took place following European settlement, and the efforts we are making to aid in the recovery of salmon populations while reconnecting communities with their local ecosystems.

Solar Canals Produce Energy and Save Water | San Fernando Valley Climate Reality Chapter Call

The San Fernando Valley Climate Reality Project meets monthly via zoom on the Second Tuesday at 7pm. Click here to register for their meetings. And check out their YouTube channel for recordings of past meetings.

Solar Aquagrid is an organization working to cover California's 4,000 miles of public water canals and aqueducts with solar installations, generating gigawatts of clean energy from solar and boosting California's water supply by billions of gallons a year.

The first pilot, Project Nexus in California’s Central Valley, came online in 2025 and has turned stretches of canal into hubs of clean electricity generation in a remote area where cotton, tomatoes, almonds, and hundreds of other crops are grown. This partnership project between Solar AquaGrid, Turlock Irrigation District, California's Department of Water Resources, and UC Merced will demonstrate how solar canals can generate energy and save water, as well as reduce canal maintenance costs and improve water quality. Meanwhile, the California Solar Canal Initiative will explore how and where solar canals can best be deployed around the state!

Join San Fernando Valley Climate Reality for an update on progress so far and what comes next with Solar AquaGrid guest speakers Jordan Harris (co-founder and CEO) and Robin Raj (co-founder and CCO).

Fire Tender tells the story of Yurok tribal members returning to traditional fire practices as an essential form of land stewardship. The film centers on Margo Robbins—grandmother, cultural educator, healer, and Indigenous fire practitioner—who is leading efforts to restore Yurok fire sovereignty: the right to use fire for tribal land care, a practice outlawed under settler colonial policies. Through her work, Robbins challenges more than a century of environmentally destructive anti-fire policies that have endangered Yurok lands and restricted access to the natural resources necessary for clean water, food, and traditional lifeways.
