Rika Gopinath leads the Parks for a Sustainable Future initiative to help cities and schools eliminate synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and adopt organic land care. She has served on the Marin County Parks IPM Commission since 2013, including chairing the commission during 2016 when County Supervisors directed Parks staff to eliminate glyphosate and other synthetic pesticides. Rika co-founded YardSmart Marin, now a Non Toxic Communities project, advocating for policy change and organic land care across the Bay Area and nationwide.
Through Beyond Pesticides' Parks for a Sustainable Future two-year pilot program, Rika helps cities from coast to coast transition public parks to fully organic management. Beyond Pesticides connects this work to climate impact directly: eliminating fossil-fuel-intensive synthetic fertilizers and pesticides which not only protects public health and the environment, but allows organically managed soils in parks and athletic fields to function as net carbon sinks.
Rika joins LA Climate Reality to show that decarbonizing our landscapes starts with the soil beneath our parks and fields.
