How to Prepare for Hurricane Hilary

There have been any number of examples of new weather phenomenon this summer as the impacts of climate change become increasingly visible. Here’s another one: California is now facing its first-ever tropical storm watch this weekend (and the first tropical storm to hit Los Angeles in 84 years).

As of Saturday evening, Hilary is currently a category 3 hurricane moving up the coast of Baja California. Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin Sunday in Southern California. Strong winds and excessive rain are expected, with the possibility of flash flooding and power outages. Here are a few useful links and tips to prepare:

How To Prepare

  • Make sure you have supplies for a few days: medication, food and

  • Prepare your home for possible strong winds and/or flooding: secure loose objects

  • Prepare for a power outage - charge your devices. put a flashlight by your bed, stock up on food that doesn’t need to be cooked

  • Avoid the roads during the storm, and if you have to drive, use caution and don’t attempt to drive through flooded streets

  • Check on your family, friends, and neighbors
