I’ve spent some time contemplating what I should write to our chapter as an end-of-year missive. Last year I went through a great list of accomplishments from our chapter. Our list is even longer this year, and it is with heartfelt thanks that I acknowledge the great work of our committees and chapter members. You’ve done great things—important things. Keep doing them.
But this year I want to address the GOP elephant in the room.

Los Angeles, September 20, 2024 – On Tuesday, September 17, Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to direct City departments to study the costs, pollution, maintenance, dangerous heat island effect, biodiversity harms, lack of water capture, disposal challenges, and related health and liability impacts of artificial turf in the City. Los Angeles Climate Reality Project applauds the Council for taking this step. At the same time, we have serious concerns about language that was introduced at the last moment in the final motion at the urging of lobbyists from the artificial turf industry and fossil fuel interests.

The Climate Reality Project, Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley Chapters, the Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance, and other coalition partners support a ban on new installations of artificial turf due to human health hazards, environmental contamination, and negative impacts on wildlife. We support natural grass fields and planting of native California plants.
