1/9/22 Chapter Call Transcript
17:33:55 And I will, sorry. Just a heads up I will start the recording now just so that we have this on file, and we can upload it to social media just for anyone that wasn't able to join us.
17:34:03 Because Sunday can sometimes be difficult and anytime can be difficult given these days.
17:34:08 So give me one second.
17:34:14 Alright. So, like I said, elections are upon us. So we have a quick timeline that I want to go over and it is this, by the end of January so January 31 we'd like to know what members of the CRP la leadership are returning, so please let her and I know,
17:34:32 if you're interested in running for any position, let us know as well we'll be doing some email blasts and just notifications about open positions that are available.
17:34:41 For example, if anyone would like to help lead the marketing team, let us know. We do have a vacancy there so please let us know. Because marketing is extremely important and we value the Marketing Committee dearly.
17:34:52 Beyond that, if you're interested in something that you don't see or you do see, let us know we can let you know if there's a coach here opportunity. We can also let you know how to get more involved with the chapter, but like I said we'd like to know
17:34:59 that information by the end of January, will start putting together the actual election forms in the platform, throughout February and then we'll have elections for approximately a week or so, at the beginning of March, and then the new terms will start
17:35:15 roughly in April.
17:35:16 Did I miss anything. Tara with regard to the election timely.
17:35:23 No, but I just wanted to encourage people if you've been on the fence or thinking about it, it really isn't a huge commitment it basically means that you're in charge of a committee, you can have a co chair if you like so you can do it with somebody,
17:35:33 and it's basically you know running committee meetings, which are usually once a month and then coming up with some projects that you all can work on together so it's a great way to build your leadership skills and step into a little more climate activism
17:35:49 So, and you know I will say I feel like it's really gratifying so just really encourage people to think about either cheering a new Committee. current committee or if you have an idea for a new committee, go ahead and let us know and where we welcome
17:36:02 anything really so any committee you want to start, we welcome it so I think that's it, Andy. Perfect. So again just to echo what Tara said, we do want to help you will answer any questions that you have.
17:36:15 If there's anything you want to do let us know, and we're happy but basically we were, we rely on all of you to be leaders you are leaders, but again this is a way to take it to the next level.
17:36:25 Maybe that can be part of your resolution. If you just want to help out with more tasks, let us know. Tara and I can tell you how to get more involved as well as the individual committee chairs.
17:36:35 That's it for elections for the most part, but again, you'll be hearing more from us. We're also going to be working on the strategic plan. The good news is, I wrote one for this year, we achieved some stuff, we didn't achieve everything, but will be
17:36:46 revising that and then we'll be handing it over to the leadership team as well as to the chapter, in case anyone wants to give feedback, let us know things that you think are missing let us know things that should be augmented modified.
17:36:58 This is a very democratic organization so let us know what you think. But strategic plans will be developed again within the coming months, that timeline will probably follow the election timeline as well.
17:37:10 Sorry, I'm just keeping an eye on who's logging in.
17:37:14 Beyond that, I do have a couple more updates, we are actually like Tara said, I'm heavily involved with what's going on with legislation. So we've actually, in conjunction with the San Fernando Valley chapter, created a greater la legislative committee
17:37:29 and what that's doing we've already met with more than four or five either assembly members or state senators, so we're just kicking off boxes trying to meet with everyone introduce ourselves as well as let them know what we're supportive of asking them
17:37:42 what they're supportive of what their environmental visions policies and whatnot, look like trying to get a better feel, having them tell us when things are coming up.
17:37:51 So again we can be as active and involved as possible, and really facilitate change. The other thing that I want to highlight. If we facilitate change within Los Angeles.
17:37:59 That's the second largest city in the United States. If we facilitate change within California. That's the fifth largest economy in the world it's still is despite the pandemic and despite population shifts.
17:38:10 So again if we make big moves, it doesn't matter what the nation is doing strike that wall it matters what the nation as a whole is doing. It's also equally big, or sizable if California makes big strides and strategic changes 2021 was not a great year
17:38:25 for that. So we're hoping 2022 will be better. I don't know that it can be worse. So, without further ado, I would like to hand it over to sorry Tara Is there anything you'd like to introduce.
17:38:38 Now go.
17:38:39 Perfect. So I'd like to introduce our first guest speaker. Oh, sorry. One quick thing. We are also supporting the cool block program and so, and had mentioned that earlier, we have roughly six climate leaders that are also going to serve as clue walk
17:38:52 leaders, that means they're facilitating and leading change presentations, learning how to be more sustainable and then helping their neighborhoods, or larger parts of the city be more sustainable Los Angeles is competing with Petaluma, Irvine, it's a
17:39:05 friendly competition let's be real if we're all being more sustainable everybody wins. But that being said we want to help Los Angeles win and La like I said as the second biggest city in the nation.
17:39:15 If we make real sustainable change that's big sustainable change not only for the state, but the nation and the world so we are going to be supporting those six cool block leaders to the best of our ability will be sharing what we're doing.
17:39:27 Also if you want to augment that in any way if you want to adopt those practices, you can be honorary cool black leaders I won't tell anyone. You're helping the city.
17:39:34 So now I'm going to turn it over to our first speaker, his name is Daniel Brooklyn, he's actually the leader of votes for the planet.
17:39:42 Thanks to him thanks to Jamie, we're actually partnering with them to have a huge social media campaign.
17:39:49 You can share your resolutions we've been sending you emails we've been posting about it. Sorry, I'm a little bit new to social media but I started posting a lot yesterday.
17:39:58 So, you can steal ideas from me you can build off of my ideas you can build off what Daniel and his team have already done, but they've made it really easy but to make it even easier I'm going to turn it over to Daniel, and he's really, because again,
17:40:09 he's a better speaker than I am about this, he's gonna let you know how to get involved and how you can actually participate in this campaign so it's good for the planet.
17:40:17 It's good for our organization, and it's good for their organization too So take it away Daniel.
17:40:23 Alright, Andy thank you so much and thank you for the opportunity to to chat.
17:40:28 Is it okay if I share my screen. Yes, I think I need to make you co host Give me one second.
17:40:32 Oh sorry, actually looks like yeah, let's see. Oh, go ahead and turn. Okay, good. Okay, perfect. Good. Okay, so I'm Daniel, I'm actually in California as well, based in San Francisco, but I come to LA sometime.
17:40:46 And so, look, you know what new year's resolutions are.
17:40:51 Wouldn't it be amazing if more people made climate resolutions and people started talking about it like it not just Earth Day, not just plastic free to July, but like sitting back and thinking like, how can I make the most meaningful impact that I can
17:41:04 have on climate change this year, so that that's what we're trying to make a thing is hard but we're trying. So here are the some top reasons to make one for yourself, you will inspire yourself to take meaningful climate action when you sit down and think
17:41:18 about how you can have the most meaningful change, you will take more action this year, when you share it on social media and talk about it with others, you're going to inspire other people to make meaningful change and think about what they can do this
17:41:30 year. You can also help make climate resolutions that thing, which can be like a cultural thing if enough people would do it. In addition to that, I will donate $5 to Climate Reality la if you tag us and them so that I can see it.
17:41:45 You could also when your choice of climate org for example Climate Reality LA to receive $1,000 donation, you could win 100 bucks you support a fellow cloud reality leader, that's me.
17:41:56 And, And, again, not that it's a competition, but Climate Reality la could easily become our partner with the most climate resolutions you could beat out to national orgs that we're partnering.
17:42:09 Unfortunately, but man, it's hard, you know it's hard without the face to face chatter. So those are some reasons why you should consider making a climate resolution I'm going to talk you through how to do it in roughly four minutes, and then we'll have
17:42:22 some time for any questions so option one is you can do it on LinkedIn and it can be super easy. Here's an example from a friend and Chief Operating Officer up here, you just click Start opposed to type your climate resolutions, you mentioned Climate
17:42:36 Reality LA, you tag us so that I can see it, and then that's it. That's it. So here's an example here and then actually, you know what I'm going to do right here is I'm just going to drop this example in the chat now.
17:42:49 You don't you don't need to, you know, just trying to make it as easy as possible you could modify that make it your own make it personal, you know, and again, sit back and think about what you can do.
17:42:59 But again, you can trigger a $5 donation to Climate Reality LA and inspire climate action in probably less than 10 minutes if you, if you are on LinkedIn and feel fill out for this, and you don't even have to follow us I mean you can, but you don't have
17:43:13 to. Yeah. Okay, great. So that's LinkedIn. So if you're on Instagram you actually have three options.
17:43:20 The first one is actually really easy so you can post any picture or video you want then share your climate resolutions in the captain and tag us against that we can see it, and had Climate Reality Los Angeles, boom, that's it.
17:43:34 It could just be a picture of your shining face or your dog or like nature, whatever it's like great option two is you can make it all on your phone, this is if you're one of those folks who loves using Instagram and make stories if you're not one of
17:43:46 those people don't do this option so but anyway. You go to.
17:43:51 Climate Reality Los Angeles, and look for the most recent second most recent post. And then you look for one of the templates that was going to be one of these but blank, and you screenshot it and crop it, then you share it to the story and type your
17:44:03 resolutions in add the tags. And then, boom, and then to post it on your feed you click back into your story you click More you click shares post, and you add your caption again, including the tags.
17:44:16 So that's if you're a savvy Instagram folk. Now, if you're not, like, I'm not, then option three is what you might want to consider, which is to go to this link here I'll drop, both of these in the chat shortly.
17:44:29 And it's a Google Slides presentation so you just click File make a copy entire presentation so you can edit it, then you go to one of these resolutions, sorry templates, add your resolutions, then screenshot, or download it and then post it on Instagram,
17:44:42 and I can do either but this is my favorite. So, and I just have to two examples here of the two custom templates that we made for Climate Reality, Los Angeles.
17:44:57 Okay, but the Hey, did I mention $10 donation and $500 so you can, there's these three things you can do here that would boost your potential prize. One person will win some money from $100, up to as much as 500.
17:45:11 And those things are following us liking and tagging any any of the client resolution posts and tagging fights tagging five friends, posting in both story and feed, I really would prefer folks to post it and feed so that you have a record of it and so
17:45:24 so people can see it, and it can inspire people longer and donate it really any amount to any climate org and send us a screenshot. I wish there were a cleaner way to do that but you can redact all the information you want.
17:45:38 If you do that, your potential price increases to 500 and I will happily double the donation to Climate Reality. La from five bucks to 10 bucks to two little details and I think these slides can be shared, I think, Is that right, Andy.
17:45:54 Okay, so for Instagram this post refers to this post so it's linked there, or just anyone on our page that talks about climate resolutions, and for LinkedIn, the rules are just a little bit simpler because there's no story.
17:46:08 This is automatically done so you're like check on that one. And we have a link to again really one of our posts on LinkedIn, but really any posts that where we talked about climate resolutions would be cool.
17:46:21 So, and then it looks like I still have one minute so I will just briefly introduce myself so again I'm Daniel, born in and live in San Francisco I did go around for school and stuff.
17:46:32 I did climb reality training, about a year, year and a half ago or so, I created funding lead virtual planet which is just a small little grassroots group that looks for unmet needs we didn't see anyone else trying to do client resolutions are like oh
17:46:44 we should try and make that a thing.
17:46:47 I work in biotech strategy but my last job was abysmal. And so I quit that and now I work part time for myself, in part because I was tired of that and more importantly because I wanted time for climate activism and political activism.
17:47:04 And with that, I think we have actually have three minutes for any questions.
17:47:09 No, there is a question in the chat. It's from Dave he just wanted to know if there's a hashtag for CRP LA.
17:47:16 So there's, there's the that's the question for you, definitely, we need to ask, so at Climate Reality Los Angeles. Do you all have a hashtag you like to.
17:47:25 We don't. So I just wanted to clarify with you just because the guidelines are sort of dictated by you as far as the donation part of it So Dave if you wanted to, I believe, make sure you do the ads but yeah you can do hashtag CRP la Climate Reality Los
17:47:41 Angeles.
17:47:43 You know, I started a hashtag and we'll start following it. Let's be real.
17:47:46 Okay. Oh, and then I see another question here about what the goal is, um, yeah so it's it's that takes me back to this first slide which is our goal is a group of friends is trying to inspire meaningful climate action.
17:48:01 And we think that trying to make climate resolutions that thing is one way to help do that as part of this, I've seen C suite level people on LinkedIn.
17:48:12 Be like, oh this is cool and post really important things that they're going to do this year, things that they wouldn't have done.
17:48:23 Anyway, and then thousands of people see those posts and they're like, oh, maybe I should take some climate action too. So talking about climate action helps change the culture, and we just see this is one way to help get more people talking about climate
17:48:39 action taking climate action, doing, doing things that we need to do now.
17:48:46 Thank you, Daniel Eugenie has another question, with regard to sharing.
17:48:52 What are the different ways to share or add on to other people's posts, is it mainly commenting on them, and also tagging those, is it sharing and uplifting what other people have done like, I guess, could you just elaborate a little more on the sharing
17:49:07 component when it's not your own personal post.
17:49:12 I'm sure, so I'm not 100% sure I understand the question. So yeah, would you like to clarify yeah yeah I just I guess one of the things I've noticed is sometimes I post things about climate issues and I, I don't really know how to connect it with other
17:49:27 like organizations I don't know maybe they're like hashtags and things like that, I guess I haven't gotten versed on that kind of thing either promoting other people's posts or putting a post up and then connecting it so other people will promote it or
17:49:41 things like that. So a couple things that one small thing is, if you tag votes for the planet, so that we can know and count it and do the donation. I actually take the link and share it with my full team.
17:49:53 So that's one way. Also when people tag guys, if you go on our profile and you click on tagged posts on the far right, you can see a lot of examples of people posting climate resolutions.
17:50:07 I Instagram or on LinkedIn I'm re sharing as well so you can look and see that in addition to that there are a number of hashtags, and I will add that to this presentation.
17:50:19 That, that are common like hashtag climate change, hashtag act on climate there's one for Climate Reality that I'm forgetting.
17:50:27 And so those are good things that related to posting the climate resolution on Facebook you can, but we're not running the event there because I an idiot and cannot figure out how to see when people tag us on both LinkedIn and Instagram I can and I spent
17:50:44 a couple hours trying to figure it out on Facebook, super confusing. So unfortunately, again, what like Sarah climate resolutions everywhere right it's just a wonderful thing to do, but in terms of the specific event I can't see you soon.
17:50:58 Thank you for clarifying Daniels so so everyone knows I did post on Facebook so you can get ideas there, promote the event there but then we'll also direct people to LinkedIn and Instagram just again because we want donations, again, it just helps feel
17:51:13 what we do, but at the same time it also raises awareness resolutions hopefully will lead to activism so hopefully resolutions lead to real action. And last but not least, you all have some resolutions in the chat so again.
17:51:28 Daniels here to answer a few more questions so I don't want to take away from that. But if you want to log into social media now posted on Instagram post it on your LinkedIn, it's a good opportunity you have some examples in the chat, I posted some on
17:51:39 Instagram as well as Facebook and I'm going to try, try to do one a day. It's just a good thing to do. It helps our organization and helps there's, and it raises awareness, which is an education which is what we're all about.
17:51:51 Yeah. and one of the things going back to the why to do this thing is so many people when they think about climate resolutions, go straight to recycling composting, which is.
17:52:05 Those are good things to do, but as Climate Reality leaders, you can help reframe what sustainability and climate action means. So when you and your climate resolution posts mentioned volunteering with Climate Reality la talking with two people about
17:52:22 climate action contacting Congress, you're making people think like, oh, maybe I should be doing more than just recycling, or more than just like driving a little bit less because what we really need is policy change.
17:52:37 And, you know, the next couple of months are actually critical we could actually potentially get some meaningful climate legislation through in the next couple months, nationally and so you know the more, more people going on social media saying, hey,
17:52:49 like, I'm going to be contacting Congress to demand that they take bold climate action.
17:53:05 Support bold climate policy, man. That would be amazing video more people doing that, when when we're learning from this is, if you, if you like this idea of what more people to do it the number one thing you can do.
17:53:08 Besides posting yours is asking someone you're close to to do it, and explaining to them why you're doing it. And that's really the only thing that works.
17:53:17 If people at a high rate to do it so if you, If you think you have one or two other friends who care about climate and this might be up their alley, you know, talk with them about why you're doing it and see if they wouldn't do it too.
17:53:31 And yeah absolutely local and state as well. Yeah, I like to do a quick plug 110% particularly when you live in California where it has such an impact.
17:53:42 Thank you, Daniel if people do have questions, let Daniel know. You can also email me, I will probably have to follow up with Daniel just again because he's the master Oh, go ahead.
17:53:52 No, I'll just drop my email right here. So you can you can email me. You can DM me on Instagram and on LinkedIn, you can't actually super confusing but I mean you can connect with me on LinkedIn and message me there.
17:54:07 And I'll also stick around for a few more minutes. In case anyone has any other questions. All right. Thank you, Daniel we're excited about this partnership.
17:54:15 For those of you on the call and hopefully when you're listening through other media. This is our chance to really have a true social media campaign to start the year off with a larger social media presence, because let's be real that's not going away
17:54:27 and it is a source of well positive and negative change let's make it positive.
17:54:32 So, I will turn it over to Tara now she's going to introduce our other key speaker. So again, there are plenty of ways to get active but if you need help facilitating that you now have our social media New Year's resolution campaign with votes for the
17:54:45 planet, but there's also an app, which is the climate action now app so I'm going to let her introduce our new speaker, or our next speaker.
17:54:52 Great.
17:54:53 Thanks, Daniel that was super awesome and we're so excited to be joining in with you on this social media campaign so thanks so much for including us thank you been wonderful partners.
17:55:05 And now I'd like to introduce Brett Walter. He is a Climate Reality leader and he's going to talk to us today about the climate action now app so we're super excited to have Brett with us.
17:55:14 Thanks so much.
17:55:17 Well, thank you.
17:55:18 Tara How much time do we have here.
17:55:29 Um, you're good for let's say like 25 minutes or so. 25 minutes. Okay, because I want to make sure I leave time for people to ask questions.
17:55:30 So I appreciate that. Well hi everybody stars said I'm a Climate Reality leader training Pittsburgh, 2017.
17:55:38 The. I'm also a software developer when Trump took us out of the client the Paris Agreement, I decided to do what I could so I started to work on this app called climate action now.
17:55:50 I hooked up with the National Organization Kimberlin the CEO.
17:55:56 He got really excited about it. We work together for several months. The app is the outcome of that collaboration.
17:56:04 We did a pilot test with the app was launched last birthday. We did a pilot test them with a few chapters.
17:56:16 In May, June, July, we documented that climate lol leaders with the app take 29 times more active leadership, with the app, and then they do without it.
17:56:38 the chapters nationwide. And you'll probably be hearing from them.
17:56:41 They have kind of official program this is sort of a one off thing we're doing with you guys.
17:56:46 So that's what it's all about. I just want to show you one. Let me see. Can I share my screen.
17:56:53 I want to show you a chart which shows what Climate Reality leaders have done thus far.
17:56:59 With the app, since we started. Like I say, back in, in, in June or July. We have 352 climate rail leaders currently are using the app. They have taken a total of 91,000 actions with the app, 69,000 of which are bonafide acts of leadership.
17:57:22 Okay, to put that in context, the entire Global Climate Reality organization with 40,000 Climate Reality leaders, took 50,000 X of leadership in 2020.
17:57:40 So in just half a year. 352 people have blown past with the entire climate real leadership core did in an entire year.
17:57:51 And in the process by the way they have earned 3106 trees real trees, which we plant on their behalf.
17:58:00 So, let me with that let me give you a quick demo of the app and to do that I'm going to share my phone screen.
17:58:11 And.
17:58:14 Okay, that should work.
17:58:17 All right, you see my phone, folks. Okay, good.
17:58:22 Um, the.
17:58:25 The app is organized by these cards, and you can swipe through them to see different kinds of actions that you can take with the app. Okay, so I'm going to go back to just here's just one in the action stream.
17:58:39 Tell your representative. That 89% of Americans support expanding solar power
17:58:47 to take this action, all I need to do is touch the, do it now button.
17:58:54 And I have previously given the app my address. And so the app will automatically look up, who is my representative.
17:59:04 And it will also look up all of my representatives contact information.
17:59:08 So I don't need to know who my representative is I don't need to know how to contact them. I don't even need to know what to say to them, because the app has talking points.
17:59:18 And so if I wanted to call an issue is my representative in Northern California. You'll notice that it begins with a personal statement, this is Brett Walter constituent innovator.
17:59:29 And if I want to call Anna, I just press the call now button comes or number, and I'm now calling Anna on my phone app.
17:59:37 Okay. And I'm not going to call her she gets a lot of calls for me.
17:59:41 I want to show you also. You could also if you prefer you could send an email and I'll touch the Email button.
17:59:51 And again, notice the first sentence here I'm a father who fears for my family in a warming world.
17:59:58 That's a highly personal statement. Now this is obviously a boilerplate, but that first sentence makes it personal and that's really, really important because when these staffers get these messages, they just blow off the boilerplate but when they see
18:00:13 a personal statement like that.
18:00:16 Then they pay more attention, and the app helps you create your own personal statements very very easy to do.
18:00:24 So I'm just going to go ahead and I'll send that email to an issue.
18:00:30 And then the app will ask me well.
18:00:33 So here's the other.
18:00:35 This was not rehearsed. This is what happens when you've earned 3000 tree points in the app you actually earn a tree, and the tree is paid for by climate action now it's planted by this organization called Eden reforestation projects.
18:00:53 And they've planned have planted 10s of millions of trees, the way they do that is they pay subsistence farmers in poor countries to plant trees and care for them on their land or in their neighborhoods, so this is the real deal.
18:01:08 these, these are one of the first grant recipients from the Bezos Earth fund. So it's a really good, really good group of people. And then, now the apple say, okay, you just contacted your legislator would you, your set your representative Would you like
18:01:24 to contact your senator, So there's Diane, and this will bring up a tweet, and again it's already boilerplate right there. And I can press the tweet button, and now it says What did you do I sent the tweet.
18:01:39 And then as you might expect.
18:01:41 It asked me, Do I want to send the same message to my other senator. There he is. I'll tweet him to, I like to tweet.
18:01:48 Because when you tweet, invariably other people. I've collected about 200 followers just from tweeting from the app. Many of those followers have thousands of their own followers.
18:02:02 And so when they retweet my tweet, it's going to a much larger audience than I can get you know by myself. So I'll say I sent that tweet.
18:02:11 Hey, Brad could ask, real quick question.
18:02:14 As we're trying to download the app, and while you're talking, um, is there an invitation code required. Yeah, there is. That's the next thing I need to tell all of you, okay great so that thank you for bringing that up tar your timing is impeccable.
18:02:29 So, the when you, when you all first download the app as Tara says it will ask you if you have an invitation code, your invitation code the invitation code for the Los Angeles chapter is 158.
18:02:49 And I'm going to, because I've already created an account it's not asking you, so I'm going to go to my if some of you by any chance already have the app and you want to put in your Los Angeles code, you can go go back here I'm going to push this, the
18:03:05 little vegan hamburger menu up and they call it hamburger Mac called vegan hamburger menu up here in the upper left corner and and then you want to select the settings.
18:03:16 And then you can select invitation code. So I'm going to put in the invitation code.
18:03:22 158, say, Okay, then what the app is doing is looking into our database and seeing, you know, okay, who invited you out there it is. Climate Reality Los Angeles says your logo in there very nice logo, by the way, folks.
18:03:39 You've been invited to use this app by the climate rally project Los Angeles chapter seven introductory blurbs, and you say, Okay, let's go. Now that's important because, from now on, whenever you was a couple reasons why having an invitation codes important.
18:03:57 One is that you saw that report that I showed you that in the beginning, that's how the report knows to credit, Los Angeles chapter, with the actions that you tech.
18:04:11 Okay. That's number one.
18:04:14 The, the other thing is that your chapter can create actions and put your own actions into the app.
18:04:24 So if you want to lobby your city council or your school district or whatever.
18:04:30 We can show you it's very easy a 30 minute training we can show you how you can put your actions into the app, and then anybody who has your invitation code the app will prioritize those actions for you.
18:04:46 So, so, john you're there you're using the app and Tara is put in an action to advocate for the city board to put the school district to put solar panels on their roof tops.
18:05:02 You'll get that action because you are a Los Angeles chapter member.
18:05:07 Now the other thing is once you put in your this will happen when you create your account. Once you put in your invitation code, the app now knows. Oh, not only are you with the Los Angeles chapter, but you're associated with the Climate Reality project,
18:05:20 and you may have a
18:05:25 reality hub ID number. Now none of you know what the heck I'm talking about but all of you who have been trained leaders, you know that you can sign into the reality hub and record your acts of leadership.
18:05:39 The app will record those acts of leadership for you automatically.
18:05:45 If you tell the app. If you give the app, your reality hub ID number, and, and, and so you'll see. So after you put in your invitation code the app will give you this screen, asking for your invitation.
18:06:00 Your, your reality hub ID number.
18:06:03 Do you find that Brett because I can't find it. You're a step ahead of me all the way.
18:06:09 Oh no I mean, this is perfect you're, it's sort of like you, you had a script or something this is perfect.
18:06:15 Let me show you how to do that.
18:06:21 And I guess you know this is being recorded so you can all come back and look at this later if you don't remember what I'm in the process of showing you.
18:06:34 So, every climate trained Climate Reality leader has your own unique reality. The reality have ID number. And the way you, it's, it's very easy to find it, it's not obvious, but it's very easy.
18:06:49 And the way you do it is you sign into your rally up account, which I have done here.
18:06:56 And then you go to your little profile menu up here, and you choose, view your profile.
18:07:02 So I'm clicking on View Brett's profile.
18:07:06 And then you wait, and then and then and then
18:07:12 also my browser slows down enormously when we're in zoom so I'm hoping this. Okay. And then you look up here in the URL field of the browser.
18:07:24 And the last number.
18:07:26 At the end, that's your reality how by ID number. Don't use my reality help ID number I'll get credit for all the actions you take Well no, what am I saying, use that number folks, 15670 and I'll get credit for all of your actions.
18:07:40 Nice.
18:07:41 So that's how you do that. And until. Once you put invitation cope and morale, how do I do number, you're good to go. One sort of caveat I want to tell you is that
18:07:55 the at the, at the request of the Climate Reality project and the national organization.
18:08:03 If you contact an influencer with the app. And then you say, then you run over to the hub to look in the reality hub to see it recorded there, you won't see it there.
18:08:14 That's at their request that that's not their actual database their actual databases is with it is with Salesforce. And so what the app does at their request we post your completed action into their Salesforce account that's their database of record.
18:08:32 Okay so, you, you, you aren't seeing the reality hub, but you're definitely getting credit. And when Tara and Andy get reports from the national organization with the totals.
18:08:43 Your actions will be included, you know, in those totals.
18:08:46 Okay.
18:08:49 So there's a lot more things in the app, but the but but that's what I wanted to you know that's a very very quick view of what you can do. There are thousands of actions in the app, hundreds are being put in every day.
18:09:05 Not only by us but by our other partners, climate action now, I mean, the Climate Reality is is moving forward full speed with the app so his elders climate action.
18:09:17 Some of you may also be members of elders climate action, their national organization has decided to adopt the app they're pushing it out I've had inquiries from Bill McKibben his new group third act 350 dot org.
18:09:29 My hope is that by the end of the year we'll have a lot of the climate organizations, getting their actions into the app.
18:09:38 It's not about me and my team, giving you things to do. It's about the organizations that you belong to putting their actions into the app think of the app.
18:09:48 The app is a platform.
18:09:51 You know, it's kind of a Grand Central Station, you'll see actions in there from the Sierra Club from elders climate from 350 and so on, you know, as, as we go forward.
18:10:02 Okay. And by the way, go ahead turn. Sorry question How does Climate Reality la put our actions in.
18:10:12 If you want, you contact me.
18:10:17 Actually contact Matthew. He's our head of content and his email is m as in, as in what I don't know mansion, you know, em, Vol wrath Vollrath at climate action now.
18:10:35 And he'll send you a link to a video a self taught I mean a video where you can learn how to do it but he's also able to give you a personal demo, if you want.
18:10:47 And, and then you're off to the races.
18:10:49 Okay, so the name of the game folks is we've got an app now, that makes it exponentially easier for people to take climate action on their phones, I mean you saw me do it.
18:11:01 I was talking the whole time. But if I hadn't been talking. Touch, touch, touch, I've taken an action. Touch, touch, touch I've taken another action, I just want to show you one more thing.
18:11:11 And this speed gets to something Daniel was saying and I was cheering you know in the background, let me just show you one, one other part of the app that really speaks to what he was talking about.
18:11:24 When you complete an action, it's automatically recorded down here in the bottom of the screen there's a button called community.
18:11:33 And there's a community feed just like with other social media apps.
18:11:39 And when you complete an action the app is automatically recorded in the community feed. So one minute ago as you can see here, Matt almost as he with this group.
18:11:51 Okay. Yes, that's already out a way to go, Matt. Good job already out of he tweeted to save the bill back better act now I can, I can like that. I can also actually go to Mass profile.
18:12:05 And I can follow Him, just the way you can follow people on other social media.
18:12:12 And now as a result of that, every time. Matt takes an action. I'll be able to see that. Now I was seeing it already because he's a member of the Los Angeles chapter and I joined the Los Angeles chapter by putting in the invitation so that's why it was
18:12:28 already there. Right.
18:12:30 But there are, you know, hundreds of other people you may want to follow their Cindy, I like to go every day, I go through. I like everybody. And if they're accepting notifications, they'll get a notification saying Brett Walter just liked this action
18:12:47 that you took. And so getting back to debt, see the whole point of this feature in the app is exactly what Daniel was saying it's to normal is set a norm establishing norm that it's okay to take climate action, and people do with their friends do so when
18:13:04 they see their friends taking action. They're more likely, you know, to take action.
18:13:11 So, this is a really cool feature I'd encourage all of you to go in like what other people are doing follow other people build a community, putting your photo by the way see how much better it looks when, when you got photos and they're supposed to when
18:13:23 you don't. And this is very typical of what you'll see people are coming in doing stuff over and over and over. So look at Maryland Palomino is just in there just going crazy.
18:13:35 And seeing Joe, Joseph Papp he's, this shows you the user and 50 trees, taking action in the app.
18:13:45 Okay, like say there's other features there's streaks. Did you lose touch the tabs down here and go exploring. And I noticed that.
18:14:00 Whoa.
18:14:03 Matt had taken an action support to build back better at. I don't know how he got he probably got the action recommended, but we have these action all the actions in the app are listed right here on the search tab.
18:14:17 And I wanted to go that we're doing a campaign right now, to try to change mansions mind.
18:14:24 And we, we create these batch stop these, these tweets. These batches of 10 tweets each. So here's I'm just going to grab one tweet storm batch 22.
18:14:36 And I will look, I did that so Okay, nevermind. Let's get another one maybe there's, I can browse all 27 of them.
18:14:43 And I'll get a bigger number, maybe, and.
18:14:46 Okay, 24. Okay.
18:14:49 Do it now, tweets are super fast, easy to do in the app, I just touched tweet.
18:14:56 And this is sort of this is pretty cool tweet here this was done by Tim Guinea, who is a green when Rick green ring recipient of the climate rally project.
18:15:07 That's kind of their top award.
18:15:10 And you'll see what he's done here is he's LinkedIn,
18:15:15 and a news organization in West Virginia. Another news organization, these are all news organizations right. They're all included in the tweet.
18:15:25 Right, so why would So Senator Joe Manchin vote against the interests of his own state.
18:15:30 We don't think that just because we tweeted Joe he's going to do anything right he's not. But if you start hearing from the news organizations in his state Hey Joe, you know what's going on.
18:15:40 And these folks they're looking at their look at they're looking at their Twitter feeds, so I'm going to go ahead and tweet him.
18:15:47 And then I say I sent the tweet, I earn some points. I'll learn a tree eventually, and then I go on, and I do another tweet, and I just, and I just keep going.
18:15:57 we have thousands, thousands folks of tweets.
18:16:02 In the app related to actually I think we have about 1000 on targeted Joe Manchin, we have several thousand targeting the bill back better act.
18:16:15 And I know I don't need to tell you all this but this is it guys, uh, you know, I'm tired as heck lobbying for build back better, but I'm going to keep doing it because I still think there was a chance we're going to get one, it's going to be mansions
18:16:30 build back better, right, we aren't going to get it unless we do what he wants. But he has said he's willing to spend up to 550 billion on climate.
18:16:40 And in fact he just said recently that he thought that the climate provisions, now that he is taken out all of their penalties for the fossil fuel industry.
18:16:49 But this, the carrots that remain he's all in favor of them right.
18:16:54 So, we can still get a bill back better with historic funding, but we just got to keep up the pressure, keep screaming and yelling bang on our pots and pans and that's what the app is really good for other questions, anybody
18:17:12 read I actually have a strategic question and I'm only curious, I just want to throw it out there this with regard to the approach to Joe Manchin. Do you think there's any chance that he would double down the other way I know it may go against the interests
18:17:26 of the state but because you can get support from Republicans and conservatives I just wonder if there, you think there's a possibility that strategy would backfire I just want to ask us, I've seen a tendency for some individuals to double down.
18:17:39 Well we were very careful not to shame him.
18:17:43 You know in the tweets right that could definitely backfire but basically for the most part, you know he's, he's a politician he plays hardball.
18:17:52 But we're not saying you idiot. You know we're saying you know you're the interest of your state, and so on.
18:17:59 You know, could it be you No, could it back, I don't, I don't know, I think one thing.
18:18:05 I don't think so. Andy i mean i think mansion has been pretty consistent, you know he's been saying all along, and democrats sort of ignored him because we tried to get him to increase his ambitions but no he wouldn't do it right he said here's what I'm
18:18:18 going to do, and he's been fairly consistent about that.
18:18:22 So, what's really going to decide what mansion does is what Democratic leaders you know Biden and Schumer and others.
18:18:30 The people who do have at real access to him, you know the I hope they just sit down with him and say okay Joe what's going to take, you know, you know, which are this.
18:18:40 Can you sign off on do a bill, get it done and then let's move on.
18:18:44 And speaking of moving on I really like what you guys are doing in focusing, you know after bill back better we all know it's legislation is done at the federal level, the whole focus has to move to the States.
18:18:58 And I just hired a legislative policy strategist, to help, and we're ready to help you guys with your state action we have access to a database that that for every piece of legislation and all the states, who is supporting it.
18:19:18 You know who sponsored it. What representatives are leaning for it. What ones are leaning against it what are their voting records, we can really drill in, and target people.
18:19:29 Matt you've been waiting patiently to ask a question, thanks for.
18:19:34 Thank you, Brett This is so this is so great, and just makes all of all of it just makes everything so easy. I have and I'm sorry if you covered this.
18:19:47 I totally understand like how this this funnels into like the Climate Reality acts of leadership sort of thing, and connecting it to your chapter and whatnot.
18:20:01 If I was to push this out my social media feed preferred to people who are not Climate Reality leaders are not necessarily members of an individual organization.
18:20:12 It is this something that, that they could take on easily enough. You understand what I'm asking. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, please do.
18:20:21 60% of the people who are downloading app, every day, are not coming from any known organization that we know, and there and there are thousands of actions for them.
18:20:33 But here's the thing, if you guys create, say, a California. Let's say you want to push you know not you know preserving net metering right you can put an we've already got an action in the app on that but if you want to put an action in the app.
18:20:50 The app will prioritize.
18:20:51 You saw that stream of actions. The app is deciding which actions to recommend. Right. And the app prioritises by your geography. So if there is an action for Los Angeles.
18:21:06 Anybody in Los Angeles, you know whether they are Climate Reality or not, will get that action.
18:21:12 And then once it's given them all the actions for Los Angeles. It will give them all the actions for California, and then it will give people the national actions.
18:21:21 So we should be blasting this out to all of our friends who just saw don't look up and her like, hey, what can I do, what can I do, right, and just a download this app and this makes it.
18:21:49 This makes a lot of this stuff really easy and accessible. Yeah, I mean, I mean we've been fighting this battle with bows and arrows, the fossil fuel industry is using Sherman tanks, you know, and, and by bows and arrows and me, you know you send an email
18:21:53 to a list with one action for people to take or maybe you post something on social media hope they'll do it You never know if they do it right it's incredibly inefficient.
18:22:03 The app is like a machine gun boop boop boop boop boop boop. You know, people can fire off hundreds of actions, you know, in just an hour.
18:22:11 And, but so we've got the tool.
18:22:14 We're putting in actions, what we need now are people who got the tool, you know, we need to just, and that's why I want to invite all of you I started to say this.
18:22:23 I know a lot of your members of other climate organizations to.
18:22:27 If you are friendly, or familiar with the leaders of those organizations.
18:22:47 Introduce me to them. Let me give them this demo, you know let's all get in this my email is maybe tar, Matt.
18:22:43 Andy email in the chat while I'm talking to be Walter at climate action now, Dennis I wanted to get to you.
18:22:49 Yeah, thank you. Brett two questions. One is, if I send this to people and I think they don't belong to our organization so they don't enter any code it still works right.
18:23:00 Yes. Okay, to, can I enter more than one code because I work, you know, like, you can. Okay. Okay, great. Thank you.
18:23:09 Welcome.
18:23:11 Anybody else there any other questions we want to leave a few minutes for a couple other announcements, but we really appreciate you coming on bread, I'm telling you this is my new addiction.
18:23:22 This is amazing. It's so easy and so awesome.
18:23:25 Thank you. Yeah, this Dave Guttman I have a question.
18:23:30 Yeah.
18:23:32 If I have a relationship with somebody who's a elected representative but not necessarily my representative.
18:23:39 I've worked on there can be a campaign or something like that. Is there a way of overriding the default that goes to my personal representative.
18:23:50 Well okay, when the when the app says, tell your representative.
18:23:59 No there, it will look up your representative, and it will let you take that action with that representative you can't override that. However, What you can do is,
18:24:09 and you would want to work with Tara or Andy on this, you can create custom actions that do target.
18:24:17 You know anybody you want to target provided you have their email, or their have their phone number or their or their Twitter handle.
18:24:28 Okay, so you can create those custom kinds of actions in there.
18:24:36 And by the way, everybody.
18:24:38 Almost all politicians have a Twitter handle, I think.
18:24:43 And that's a great way and and we've noticed, not really at the federal level but we've noticed at the state level, that state representatives do from time to time, respond to the tweets that our app users take.
18:25:01 Okay, thank you.
18:25:02 Yeah. Okay, great. Let's have one more question from Liz and then we just want to leave a couple minutes for a couple announcements.
18:25:11 Just real quick, um, Brett, I have a question on this app so you say this, this basically can report straight to do like whatever these he is trying to do for our actions right.
18:25:21 But you said it also syncs to the reality hub, or it doesn't it doesn't sink to the reality hub. It syncs to their, their reality official database of record.
18:25:36 Okay, which is a Salesforce database. Okay, so it's not reality hub. It's not right you want to see it on reality yeah but when Ken Berlin sits down to do a report of how many people Los Angeles took action.
18:25:49 He doesn't go to.
18:25:50 He goes to the Salesforce data.
18:25:53 And he'll see you in there. So we would have to still do it if we wanted to show up in reality out there to right to do it manually if you wanted to show up and in reality hub, and what your double counting but what that I didn't don't quote me folks
18:26:16 Okay, thanks. Thank you for clarifying bread and Liz, I'm Tara this goes into announcements, just so everyone knows not tar and I just had a meeting, national is redeveloping their engagement program.
18:26:28 We already talked about the other announcements, but they're also going to be redeveloping the reality hub app, or just application in general because they know that it's a little behind the times.
18:26:37 So if you do have feedback do share that with the national team so they, they know what would be more helpful but there is a team working on redeveloping that whole database that whole software system.
18:26:51 Okay. And I know Lucy wanted, thanks so much Brett we really appreciate you coming on today and for sharing this awesome app with us. You're very welcome.
18:27:02 Lucy I know you wanted to share a couple things about your really exciting. Climate education resolution.
18:27:09 Yeah.
18:27:11 Thank you for the for the moment.
18:27:17 If, if there's any way a little bit later and just like two minutes from now if you if you could let me share a screen. That'd be great. Um, can do it.
18:27:24 Yeah. Alright. Awesome. So, first of all, the climate current curriculum committee. it has been working to get climate education expanded beyond stem into the humanities, because that's where, you know, cultural and political and policy or culture and
18:27:44 policy are decided, and that's what's what's changing the climate is our culture and our policies, right. So, we. There's 500 more than 500,000 students in or about 500,000 students in LA USD, and we have a chance to.
18:28:04 In the next few weeks to get this district this giant district second largest in the nation to actually give enough money because money is there from covert release to train teachers to teach climate across the curriculum.
18:28:22 All right, so we have.
18:28:27 As of, Yeah, yeah, this is super exciting to me.
18:28:32 You know, the, the, the, the, you know, the devil is always in the details is going to be in the implementation of this thing. So that's you know that's what's going on now.
18:28:42 January the 18th which is a week from what is, you know, a week from Tuesday, there's going to be a board meeting where this is presented, where Scott Carlson who presented our hundred percent committed resolution on energy.
18:28:58 He's going to present on this resolution on literacy. So you can see a, a version, it's not the official version yet at our website.
18:29:10 In, in Climate Reality projects website and you can go ahead on to do that.
18:29:16 Look at that.
18:29:19 And then you can also take take action that will help.
18:29:27 Before the February, 8, vote. So, what we want you to look at is this.
18:29:35 So, here you can see, I, I will just drop your, your, I think a lot of people here have already gotten but if you are not haven't gotten this email, then drop it into drop your email into the chat I'll say the chat now have, you know, I'll make sure that
18:29:51 this gets out to you to this is from the board's website but it's not easy to find. Email the board, all board members, and any item that is saved received by 5pm of the day before the board meeting will be distributed to the board members.
18:30:05 So that's, you know, effective communication right at the point of, of, of a right at the point of vote. So here's, here's where you can register to speak.
18:30:20 If you would like to speak, we are registering speakers for ourselves so you would be in the public commentary sent you know section of it. We're trying to you know, sort of, be sure to be the people who are registered for the item speakers or mode, many
18:30:53 them at least four of them. And because only seven speakers per item. And so that day we're really trying to get the you know somebody from the union and, you know, that kind of thing people, people in there to speak, and I'm just, I just don't wanted
18:30:51 you to be able to see this either screenshot it now take a photo of it or drop your name in the, in the, in the chat and I'll make sure you get it.
18:31:01 So I'm super excited.
18:31:04 Any ideas that you have please contact us at climate curricula@gmail.gmail.com How sad that we were only form five or eight months ago. And that was a perfectly available.
18:31:23 It was a perfectly away available. What do you call it, email, the only one climate curricula at gmail. com. So, thank you very much for listening to what I had to say.
18:31:36 We're late.
18:31:38 That's amazing. This is really exciting.
18:31:42 So thank you so much for sharing that. And I'm actually going to see if that's something we can put into this climate action now app to get people to sign your petition so we'll see if we could do that but this is awesome, thank you so much Lucy, go sign
18:31:57 the petition where you can sign the petition but do this instead what okay so we can put this specific action in there. Yeah, there's a reach out to Brett and see if we could do that.
18:32:08 Yeah, the petition you can sign it, but it's not going to get to the board members possibly because my Google account was was just a splendid for some reason.
18:32:18 So that's right.
18:32:19 Yeah. Okay, awesome work thanks Lucy, I'm Dale also wanted to make a quick comment as well.
18:32:29 Hi everybody, I'm Dale I chair the healthy oceans committee and I wanted to follow up on some the Chumash marine sanctuary of good news there it's now in the final stages over at NOAA, and they're welcoming comments in support, or against but please support
18:32:49 it. And I will provide a link several links actually for actions that you can take to help our local oceans, and that'll be included.
18:33:00 Another good thing that I'm following up on the new president of the Screen Actors Guild sag AFTRA.
