Educator Action Guide for Climate Literacy

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) passed a Climate Literacy Resolution in February 2022. The resolution commits LAUSD to “transforming our teaching of climate change to meet the scale and urgency of the crises by implementing, infusing, and developing climate change education across all curricula, and in every grade PK-12.”

The resolution calls for establishing Climate Champion positions at all schools. Climate Champions are certificated employees who help other teachers incorporate climate/climate justice issues into their lessons, and get students outdoors and into nature.

The UTLA Contract calls for full implementation of the resolution.

Our Climate Curricula Youth Action Committee asks that you

  1. Find out if your school has a Climate Champion: Look here for a map of all schools that have a Climate Champion or ask your principal.

  2. If you have a Climate Champion, ask for time to meet and plan with them.

  3. If not, talk with your principal to nominate a climate champion. Here’s who’s in charge.

  4. Fill out our form so we can help.

Would you become the Climate Champion for your school? For more information: LAUSD page for Climate Champions ($1800 stipend)

Curricula resources are located on the LAUSD Climate Literacy page, as well as the Schoology group for Climate Education (CFV9-FGK8-MN26S) and here on LA’s Climate Reality website.

Join the Climate Curricula Youth Action Committee meetings on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 2 to 3:30 pm to organize our efforts. All are welcome!
