For our November meeting, we were joined by Krystle Hickman, a Los Angeles-based National Geographic Explorer, TEDx speaker, conservation photographer, and native bee expert.
In conversation with LA Climate Reality's Charles Miller, Krystle talked about the wide variety of more than 1200 native bee species in California, and the challenges facing them due to climate change and habitat loss.
Hickman explained how she came to specialize in native bees, and how her work is an example of community science, in which someone without a formal degree can study and contribute to science. Hickman has made multiple specific contributions to the understanding of native bee behaviors through observation and photography.
Krystle Hickman uses visual storytelling to raise awareness about the decline of native bee species.
Krystle uses her photography to raise awareness about the decline of native bee species in California and around the world.
Hickman recently published her first book, The ABC's of California's Native Bees, in which she writes about the incredible diversity of bees in our state through stories and photographs of 26 bee species and their ecosystems.
Krystle’s work has also been featured in the LA Times, on Vox, PBS, and the podcast Ologies. She has also presented at the 2024 UN Biodiversity Conference and in academic settings.
