April ‘25 Planting Native Street Trees in Palms

Francis Pl. In Palms (Los Angeles)

On April 26, LA Climate Reality partnered with the Palms Neighborhood Council and other partners for a native tree planting event. The volunteer event was part of a pilot project to plant native tree species that have not been traditionally used as street trees.

Our local biodiversity is in crisis.  Using native species as street trees is an effective measure to bring more ecosystem health to our urban forest while also increasing street tree canopy to offset the urban heat-island effect.

The event was also part of Shine LA, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s initiative to encourage volunteer projects across the city. The Mayor stopped by to talk to the volunteers, who came out despite the rain.

Other organizations that helped organize the event were the Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance, the office of City Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky, LA’s Community Forest Advisory Commitee, and the Verdant Venice Group.

Volunteers also signed up to water the trees on a monthly basis to help these trees become successfully established and watch them develop.
