Venice Blvd In Palms (Los Angeles)

On May 11, LA Climate Reality partnered with the Palms Neighborhood Council and Streets are for Everyone (SAFE) for a cleanup in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles on Venice Boulevard between Overland and Canfield Ave. Our chapter’s Biodiversity Committee helped coordinate and audit the waste.

Around 30 participants (some came late, some left early, so there are never that many in the photos) removed about 3 cubic yards of waste from the sidewalks, parking lots, and medians along this stretch of Venice Blvd.

Our inventory discovered 90 corporate brands connected to the waste, of which, only about 10% was recyclable (we did recycle what we could). McDonald’s was the leading generator of waste. Smoking-related material was the highest source of waste by number.  Multi-material plastic food packaging (non-recyclable) was the highest source of waste by volume.

Our inventory of the waste collected can help inform policy related to single-use plastics, recycling, and sanitation. The Biodiversity Committee will have a more detailed written report available in a few weeks.

If you want to be involved in future cleanups, connect with your local Neighborhood Council or join our Climate Reality chapter.
